Memorial to the crash of Wellington DV930
The Wellington 1c, which was despatched from Steeple Morden, a satellite airfield of 11 Operational Training Unit, at RAF Bassingbourne had been on a bombing mission to Dusseldorf was attempting to return to base with damage inflicted over the target when it crashed into the stack-yard at Herne Hill Farm Chediston on the night of 10th September 1942. Sgt. Renwick survived the crash but died to following day from his injuries. The crew were:
Sgt. Thomas Frazer Munro, RNZAF, (Pilot). Husband of Dorothy M. Munro, of Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, and is buried in Ipswich Old Cemetery
Sgt. Jack Foden Stanley RNZAF, (navigator). Son of Thomas Armitage Stanley and of Florence Hilda Stanley, of Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand; and is also buried in Ipswich Old Cemetery.
Sgt. Andrew Scott Renwick (RAF) Wireless Op/Air Gunner. Son of William Montgomery Renwick, and of Elsie A. Renwick, of Edinburgh; he is buried in Camelon cemetery, Sterlingshire.
Sgt. Kenneth Hamilton Vigers (RAF) Air Bomber. Son of the Revd. Edgar Hall Vigers, M.A. and Marjorie Constance Vigers, of Abbots Ripton; he is buried in Little Stukeley (St. Martin) Churchyard, Huntingdonshire
Sgt Robert Walter Freeman (RAF) Air Gunner. Son of William Harold and Eliza Freeman, of Egham; he is buried in Englefield Green Cemetery, Surrey.
