Sweffling St Mary?s church
The church sits high on the brow of a hill with the street and houses below. The porch is panelled with stone and flint flushwork with three niches above the doorway, with George and the Dragon in the spandrels. I was delighted when I entered the church through the 12th century Norman doorway, for it is not just a church, it is also a museum. Beneath the tower, there are photographs and paraphernalia depicting village life of the past. The font has shallow arcading around the 13th century bowl. The simple piscina is utilised as a shelf to keep a prayer-book stand. The Arms of Queen Anne hang high on the north wall above the Commandments and Lord’s Prayer of the same period. The church has in its possession a boiled leather 14th century chalice case, unique in Suffolk. It is not however on public display.
