The Old Mill, Snape
The composer Benjamin Britten bought the former windmill in Snape in 1937 with a legacy from his parents; its conversion to living accommodation was carried out by the architect Arthur Welford, to whose son his sister Beth was engaged. Britten shared the mill for a while with the composer Lennox Berkeley and later with his life partner Peter Pears; the two left the mill for Aldeburgh in 1947. Some of Britten's best known works were composed here, most notably the opera "Peter Grimes" (as the plaque notes). It is now available to stay in as self-catering accommodation.
