This 16th Century Inn once stood in the heart of the town. Coastal erosion means much of the town has disappeared beneath the sea leaving this building on the seafront.

Grade II Listed public house. Late 16th century, reconstructed in brick mid 19th, altered mid 20th century. The 1904 Woodbridge licensing record shows that the Mill's license was issued in 1790. William Hart occupied the property from at least 1812 and it is advertised for sale by auction by a Mr Wynter in 1825 but in 1850 the Ipswich Journal reports ' Auction sale of the Mill Inn, Aldeburgh; now occupied by Mr John KEMP on behalf of the late owner, Mr William HART, deceased'. In 1830 a mail cart left here daily, with letters and parcels, to Saxmundham departing at 5pm. In the 1950s it was internally remodelled and the mock Tudor external cladding and leaded casement windows were added. By 1969 it is in the hands of Adnams & Company and the incumbents are Alan and Wendy Goldsmith. The pub underwent a major internal refurbishment in early 2012. A search of my directories under Alderburgh or Alderborough pulled up 'Mill' or 'Mill Inn' at various addresses including Church Street, Back Street and Beach; 1839 William Hart; 1855 John Kemp; 1869 Mrs Sarah Easter; 1891-1892 Robert Newman; 1900-1912 Frederick Samuel Jordan.

The Mill Inn has late 16th century origins. The building is timber framed and was encased in brick in the mid 19th century. The Victoria Road front has a Tudor-style public house front of three segment arched windows which returns to Market Cross Place with three further windows. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1269694 Aldeburgh is a coastal town, some 20 miles north east of Ipswich and 23 miles south of Lowestoft. Although there are traces of Roman and Saxon occupation, Aldeburgh was a little fishing village until the shifting coastline opened up a sheltered harbour which became a thriving ship building centre. As the River Alde silted up the town’s fortunes waned, and it survived as a fishing village until the 19th Century when it became a fashionable seaside resort. A classical music festival takes place at nearby Snape Maltings each year.
