Pettaugh St Catherine?s church
Pettaugh’s 14th century church stands on a prominence on the east side of the parish, overlooking a small tributary of the River Deben. The tower is coeval with the church but the battlemented parapet and solitary gargoyle was added a century later. The chancel is quite unaltered internally and retains the old south door. Unfortunately, the exterior has been cement-rendered, marring the general appearance. There are two piscinas but neither is exceptional. The font is of the traditional East Anglian variety and is contemporary with the church. During restoration work last century some small brasses were discovered, probably memorials to the Fastolfe family who lived at Pettaugh Hall in the 16th and 17th centuries. The prayer desk is made partly of Stuart bench ends with interesting carvings.
