Old Newton village sign
The horse, as far as I know has nothing to do with the Old Newton Cup held at Haydock Park. It is there in recognition of the part they played in the village’s past history. Speaking of past history the axe and sword featured on the sign are symbols of the past battle between the Danes and Saxons that took place at Stonebridge which is also depicted. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4293703
