Church of Our Lady
The full dedication is to Our Lady of the Seven Dolours. The building was designed in 1884 by the Scottish architect Alfred Edward Purdie, as an infant school with a convent chapel in the upper storey. Unfortunately the magnificent parish church intended to complete the project was never built owing to shortage of funds. The upper chapel became the parish church. Pevsner, who surveyed the buildings of Suffolk in 1961, noted only the "small octagonal campanile crowned by a spire" - seen more clearly in Helen Steed's photo Image Then in 1970 the interior was reordered to create a new sanctuary on the ground floor - a more accessible arrangement and one in keeping with the new trends in liturgy. The upper storey became a parish hall. Suffolk Churches www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/stowmarketrc.htm Taking Stock https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/stowmarket-our-lady/
