16 Market Hill, Framlingham
Early 16th century Grade II Listed former Queen's Head public house. The opening to the left, 'Queen's Head Passage', leads out to Fore Street and is thought to be the original toll entrance into Framlingham. Variously dated as late 1400s or early 1500s it was originally called the Blue Boar. The name was changed to the Queen's Head before 1800 so probably refers to Queen "Bloody" Mary I who came to Framlingham twice, taking refuge in 1550 and re-visiting after being crowned. In the early days the rear of the inn was used by bear-leaders while the bears slept outside. Directory entries list: 1839 Charles Revett, 1855 Cath. Sheppard, 1869 Thomas Waight, 1891-1900 Mrs Mary Ann Clow and 1912 John Reeve.
