The Crown, 29 Market Hill, Framlingham
Grade II Listed mid 16th century inn with late 17th century alterations. It was reputedly built as a lodging for Mary Tudor's knights when she visited Framlingham Castle in 1554. An 1865 reference describe it as 'commercial hotel and posting house and it has also been used as a corn exchange'. In 1844 Petty Sessional Courts were held at the Crown Inn alternate Fridays and in at least 1891-1912 'Freemasons meet at the Crown Hotel on Wednesday nearest the full moon', lodge 555. The central doorway, previously the carriageway through to Fore Street, was not enclosed until 1952. Directory entries include; 1839 William Taylor (& posting house); 1855 William Collins; 1869 John Pipe (& posting house & corn exchange); 1891 William G L Sewell; 1892 Walter Cocks (& posting house); 1900 Tom Alfred Brooks (& posting house); 1912 Frank Pullan (& jobmaster - who lets out horses and carriages by the job).
