Earl Soham St Mary?s church
The tower has three canopied niches on its western face as you approach the church. Above the south porch door there is a stone figure on the gable and a carving of a lion immediately below; and beneath that, an inscription. The church is beautifully kept with a wealth of wood-carving to enjoy.

St Mary's church in Earl Soham - Victorian bench end
St Mary's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2093543 dates from the 13th century and was originally dedicated to St. Andrew. The nave was rebuilt in the 15th century. During extensive restoration work, starting in 1890, the east window was replaced and the Jacobean box pews were replaced with individual wooden chairs. The box pews had incorporated earlier carved pew ends dating from the 15th century > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2095400. A few of these were saved and stored in the loft of one of the Rectory barns, only to be rediscovered again in 1928. Additional pew ends were created by a group of woodcarvers based at Eyke and the seats and bench backs were mostly made locally in the workshops of Wm Baldry. The salvaged medieval bench ends can be found in the first five rows. The benches were installed in the 1930s.

St Mary's church in Earl Soham - scratch dial
Scratch dial on the south wall of St Mary's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2093543. A twig was inserted in the central hole and whenever its shadow fell onto one of the carved lines it was time for mass, again.
