Hemley All Saints church
Hemley is a tiny village on the banks of the river Deben with Ramsholt on the opposite bank. Time hasn’t passed it by; it is a thriving community. The tower of the church appears at first glance to be quite modern but it is not. The body of the church is 13th century and is entered by the half-timbered porch through a south doorway with a cusped arch. Inside there is little distinction between the nave and the chancel, only the style of the roof really sets them apart. The 13th century font is very mutilated and has a large square bowl supported by a heavy central pillar and four smaller ones at each corner. The reredos is beautifully carved from mahogany, but what it originally was escapes me - a bed-head perhaps?
