Newbourne: on Mill Road
In the 1930s the Land Settlement Association provided cottages and five-acre smallholdings for unemployed workers and their families, especially people from the North East and Wales, in about twenty villages in England, including Newbourne. The smallholdings had glasshouses, some of which were much expanded and still exist. With the arrival of the smallholders and their families the population of the village grew from 80 to nearly 200 in three years. The LSA ceased to exist in 1983 and the land and houses are now privately owned. Many of the houses have been extended and altered.
Nikolaus Pevsner described the small houses originally provided in Newbourne: “Each [plot has] a small house of yellow brick, only two windows long, with a high-pitched roof the [gable] of which is weatherboarded.”
