The Angel, 2 Theatre Street, Woodbridge
Grade II* Listed 16th century inn. There is evidence of a pub on this site as far back as the 12th century but this building probably largely dates from 1678. Formerly known as The Black Boy in what was then Bridewell Lane the first listing is as "well established" in 1153. John Redgrave appears to be the first recorded innkeeper in 1730. The first reference to the Angel is in 1802 in the Ipswich Journal that describes it as 'formerly The Black Boy in Woodbridge'. In 1835 auction particulars it states that 'The premises have lately been put in complete repair. The house is now in full trade, and there is a good stabling for 60 horses'. By 1842 Catchpole & Co brewery is up for sale that includes 'several well accustomed public houses' including 'the Angel inn, near the marketplace'. Woodbridge licensing records show that the Angel's licence was issued in 1853. Stocking over 195 varieties of gin and 185 other spirits in 2013 it was short-listed as one of six finalists in the Best Spirits Pub category for the BT Sport Great British Pub Awards. Directory entries include; 1839 William Beecroft; 1855 John Westrup; 1869-1892 Arthur Goldsmith (& blacksmith); 1900-1912 William Daniel Whitman.
