Woodbridge St John?s church
This church was built between 1842 and 1845 out of necessity to support the increase in prosperity in the town. It was designed by J. M. Clark and built by Alfred Lockwood. Construction is in white brick, with a west tower, on top of which is a slender zinc or lead covered spire. The windows are all tall and narrow, lancet-like. At the east is an apse. A tall stone pulpit was installed in 1888 as an afterthought and later lowered to its present height. It is an interesting exercise to wander round and compare this interior with mediaeval churches which have been adapted and altered, in an attempt to satisfy the fastidious requirements of the Victorian church-architect. Here they had a free hand, starting from scratch, with a pleasing result. Restorations of Norman and Mediaeval churches have not always been so agreeable.
