Ipswich: detail of the Giles statue, east end of Buttermarket
The cartoonist Ronald "Carl" Giles (1916-1995) was a long-time resident of Ipswich (though born in London). This statue, showing characters from the family he depicted in his long-running cartoon series in the Express newspapers, stands at a street intersection now called Giles Circus. The matriarch of the family, always known simply as "Grandma", is apparently looking up at the windows of a newspaper office where Giles used to work.
