St. Mary & St. Martin's; the parish church of Kirton
This church dates back to the 14th century, however, the tower was built in 1520 and the north aisle is 19th century.

Tower of SS Mary & Martin
The west tower was constructed, and bells hung, in the reign of Henry VIII. The base is composed mainly of septaria from local beaches, with flint and brick being used in the upper stages.

Royal Arms of Elizabeth II in the Church of SS Mary & Martin
A rare (and very small) example of Royal Arms from a modern reign in an early Tudor church, these are displayed on the south wall.

Kirton St Mary and St Martin?s church
As you approach the church, you will notice how brown the tower appears. This is because septarium was largely used in its construction. It seems to blend in nicely with the colour of the roofs and is unusual in Suffolk. The church was mentioned in Domesday but no sign of the Saxon building remains today. Today’s church is mainly 15th century with the tower being added half a century later. Internally the roof of the nave has the appearance of an inverted hull of a ship. The 14th century piscina is flanked by a dropped sill sedilia. The font is a strange one; it is of 13th century square design with a supporting column at each corner, but lacks the usual decorations apart from flowers around the base of the bowl. The 18th century rector’s daughter was the writer Clara Reeve. She is buried in St. Stephen’s churchyard in Ipswich; now the Tourist Information Centre.

Font in the Church of SS Mary & Martin
The square font at Kirton is square and is thought to date from the 13th century, a survival from an earlier church on the site. Unusually it now stands not near the entrance but at the east end of the north aisle, a 19th-century addition to the present early Tudor building which itself is some three centuries younger than the ancient font. The timber cover, an octagonal pyramid, may well be a much newer addition.
