Mearclough Bridge, Sowerby Bridge
This narrow masonry arch bridge was strengthened by 'saddling' (filling the space over the arches between the spandrel walls with reinforced concrete) in the 1970's. Hence it is strong enough to carry heavy goods vehicles to and from the adjoining recycling depot. However, the parapet has taken a severe blow from a large vehicle!

Repairs to Mearclough Bridge, Sowerby Bridge
The repair work is now almost finished. The parapet walls have been rebuilt and it looks as if a new tarmac surface is all that is left to do.

This is the northern arch of the bridge with its newly repaired parapet wall. Fortunately the recent extremely high flows in the River Calder have not damaged this bridge.
