Houses at Field House, Upper Field House Lane, Sowerby
The lowest house is the side of the old Field House of 1630, but these seem to be of the 19C. Notice the clever insertion of a Gothic doorway into the side of the wide arch.

Old Field House, Upper Field House Lane, Sowerby
A large clothier's house of 1630, with a magnificent carved head over the door – was this the first owner?

Field House, Sowerby
In Calderdale there are many good 17C houses and big mill-owner's houses of the 19C, but a large Georgian house like this is somewhat of a rarity. A house has existed here since beforte 1240, and an ancient hall was rebuilt by the Stansfield family in 1630 (Old Field Hall). A Palladian-style house was built alongside for George Stansfield in 1749. The Stansfield coat of arms and the motto "Know thyself " can be seen on the pediment. See http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calderdalecompanion/f.html (scroll down to Field House, Sowerby).
