That the Tour de France should pass through Yorkshire is incredible, but even more amazing is the vast crowds that have come out to watch it. On the left an enterprising person has erected a scaffolding tower to watch from.

Blackley House, Blackley, Elland
An elegant house, which might perhaps have been built for a local mill or factory owner, but as it pre-dates any industry in the immediate area it could have been for a landowner who had reached the rank in society of gentleman?

South Lane is a road at each end, but only a track in the middle as it climbs the steep hill from Elland town to Blackley. This is the short surfaced road at the Blackley end.

Tour de France at Blackley - tail end Charlie
He doesn't look happy about being last on the road, probably due to mechanical problems rather than lack of fitness. He gets just as much encouragement from the crowd as the front-runners. Looking at the exif data, he was only a minute behind the peloton.

Tour de France, part of the leading group at Blackley
They have been a few minutes ahead of the peloton for most of the stage, and have just ridden up the steep climb of Blackley Road, today the 'Côte de Greetland'. They stayed clear until Holme Moss.
