The Airborne, Sowood Green, Stainland
An unusual name, explained for me by John Baker: "I remember this pub being built in the 1960s, by an ex-paratrooper (his name escapes me). He lived on the job in a caravan and did most of the work himself. The highlight of the opening ceremony was to be a parachute drop onto the car park by members of the parachute regiment but was cancelled due to winds and the proximity of high voltage power lines." I now have further information from Mark Greenwood, who writes that it was his grandfather, Harold Dyson, who built the pub, and that he lived in the farm next door to the left. An article in the Huddersfield Examiner, in June 2012 about a planning application for the building of an 'eco-house' in the car park, stated that the pub was opened in 1969 and closed in 2009.
