This was Holywell Green Lane on the 1850 6" map, before the railway was built, and the houses along it already existed at that date.

Holywell House, Station Road, Holywell Green, Stainland
The garden front of the building on the other side looks more conventional. This side looks strange; There is some very fine ashlar stonework, mainly plain but with a busy design below the first-floor window. To the right an elaborate ashlar centre, with very plain walls and windows each side. The house was built by a mill-owner and has more recently been a care home.

Holy Well, Holywell Green, Stainland
The inscription reads 'Holy Well improved 1843', but there does not seem to be a well now, only a trough with plants in it. St Helen's Well was some distance away at Helen Hill Farm along Jagger Green Lane.

A curious arrangement. Steps up to a first floor entrance, whilst the ground floor of the buildings seems to be a separate dwelling. The washing is still hung out to dry in the traditional way.
