Crawstone Hall, Dog Lane, Greetland
When I looked up the listing details I was surprised to find that it is what looks like the newer wing of the building, to the left, that is Grade II listed. It was built as the parlour wing attached to the main house of 1631. The old house started collapsing and most of it had to be demolished and rebuilt in the 1980s. Someone who knew the family told me: "The owner's mother lived in the old part of the hall and one morning I believe in the late 60s, the front gable simply collapsed into the fields, leaving her lying in bed looking into the field below!" The gate piers to the house are also of c.1700, and listed Grade II.

Stile on Elland Footpath 51
This is at the junction of two branches of the path - Straight on through the stile leads to Dog lane near Crawstone Hall, and a right turn up the hill leads to Dog lane on its way to Rochdale Road.

Elland Footpath 51 at Crawstone Hall
The right-of-way is along a fenced strip on the far side of the wall, but it seems that many people prefer to walk along the bottom side of the wood.

Gates on Elland Footpath 51
This is on the path that runs down from Crawshaw Hall Wood to Syke House Lane near Saddleworth Road. The path starts at the little gate in the fence just below the wood, and then passes through the field gate into a fenced track, leaving it via the gate in the foreground. The path has evidently been diverted, as it is shown on the 1:25000 map as slanting across from the blue object next to the big shed but the on-line rights-of-way map shows it on its present route.

Gate on Elland Footpath 51
A nice little gate, but the surface of the path is uncomfortably chopped up. It skirts round the right-hand side of a square enclosure, presumably for exercising or training horses, and then goes through the gates shown in Image
