Fence and gate off the Sutcliffe Wood footpath, Hove Edge
The path along the top of Sutcliffe Wood continues here, where the public footpath turns left to Halifax Road. I thought it might go down to Sutcliffe Wood Lane from where it would not be far to the path through Slead Syke Wood, but did not explore it because there is a 'private' sign on a tree. Now it is securely fenced and I was curious to know why such expense was justified. I checked old maps and found the path is on the 1966 1:2500 map, leading only to the disused Tuck Royds Quarry. This is used by Rand & Asquith for processing stone from their quarries at Lower Edge, Rastrick, and Fly Flatts, so it is not surprising that they don't want people wandering into their site.
