Old millstone, Luddenden High Street
An information board nearby records that the ancient "Warley Soke" or manorial corn mill stood on the adjacent site (which is now occupied by housing). The lintel stone here bears the date 1633 and various letters - see Image for a close-up of the inscription, and explanation.

Datestone from the 17C corn mill
A nearby information board states that the corn mill for the manor of Warley was first recorded in 1274. In 1633 the mill was owned by Henry and Jane Murgatroyd, and they rebuilt it. The datestone is inscribed "1633 / M / H I" with also the letters W and S, probably standing for Warley Soke, flanking the 'M'.
