Victoria Theatre, Halifax
This is the Fountain Street side of the entrance part of the theatre. All round the theatre the names of composers, presumably of operas, are inscribed. The three in this view are Bishop, Wallace and Arne. Henry Rowley Bishop was born in London in 1786 and died there in 1855. He was the first musician to be knighted. The famous song 'Home Sweet Home' is from one of his operas. William Vincent Wallace was born in Waterford, Ireland, in 1812 and died in 1865. He wrote two very successful operas: 'Maritana' and 'Lurline'. See Image for William Wallace's memorial in Waterford. Thomas Augustine Arne is the only one of the three who is still well-known. He was born in London in 1710 and died there in 1778. 'Rule Britannia' comes from his masque 'Alfred'. He wasn't really an operatic composer; his opera 'Artaxerxes' has some success, but was old-fashioned at the time.

Victoria Theatre, Halifax
This is the corner next to Fountain Street and Powell Street. The two composers named on the building here are Parry and Sullivan. Hubert Parry was born in 1848 and died in 1918. He became Director of the Royal College of Music, and was knighted in 1898. He is best known for his vocal music, especially the song 'Blest Pair of Sirens'. Arthur Sullivan was born in 1842 and died in 1900. He is famous for his collaboration with William Gilbert, producing a long list of operettas. Queen Victoria was evidently amused, as he was knighted. He also wrote orchestral and vocal music, and a grand opera, 'Ivanhoe'.
