Beverley Road, Kingston upon Hull
An unglamorous view between Fountain Road and Somerscales Street. Far left, the Swann Inn, former public house, No.148 Beverley Road, refronted 1898, now disused. Next door, No.144, the ruins of the former National Picture Theatre, a 1914 cinema, designed by Runton & Barry. This building was badly damaged during a Luftwaffe air raid, 18 March 1941. Although 150 people were sheltering in the foyer, no one was killed. The building is remarkable for being a rare survival of a building bombed during the Blitz of World War Two. The building is all that is substantial that remains as a physical reminder of the Hull Blitz, a local event of national and European significance.
