Site of Pontrilas Station
Site of the former Pontrilas Station on the Marches Line between Newport and Hereford. The station was opened in 1854 and closed in 1958, but campaigners are seeking its reopening as a parkway station (possibly on a slightly different site) to serve the local area and to close the 25 mile gap between Abergavenny and Hereford.

Pontrilas shuttle
This tractor and trailer passed me several times during my visit to the area. Each time, the trailer was fully loaded when travelling in this direction, and empty in the opposite direction. The trailer is full of potatoes. Viewed from the edge of Ward & Co's premises. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2590317

The Old Post Office, Pontrilas
There is a small sign showing 'The Old Post Office' on the wall of the corner house, at the end of a short row of houses, Doyre Terrace. The current post office http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2588933 is about 70 metres behind the camera.

EWS Class 60 at Pontrilas
A familiar sight of the Marches line, steel coil trains are normally Class 66 hauled. The down line signal warns of an approaching passenger train. Pontrilas was once a junction, the Golden Valley line to Hay-on-Wye leaving just beyond the signal box. Trains with timber from the Highlands sometimes use the siding in the foreground.

Pontrilas Post Office
Located near the eastern edge of the village, at the entrance to Pontrilas Business Park, near the A465 junction. Although the name Pontrilas is of Welsh origin (there are many such place names in western Herefordshire), the village is about a mile on the English side of the border. Compare the simple 'Post Office' here with the bilingual sign at Mardy post office http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2580861 about 10 miles away, in Wales. The former Pontrilas post office http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2593060 is about 70 metres to the west.

Viewed from the junction with the road through Pontrilas. The A465 heads towards the B4347 junction for Ewyas Harold, then, after crossing the River Monnow into Wales, heads for Abergavenny.
