Marked on the map by a simple cross: the Friends' Meeting House, Jordans
This little building has no architectural pretensions at all, so that there is very little - externally - to tell you that it dates from 1688. Only the rows of modest tombstones hint at the building's purpose. As I understand it, Quakers endeavour to live honestly and simply, in equality and peace. Perhaps we can learn from them.

Quaker meeting house
Jordans Friends Meeting House was built in 1688 shortly after the Declaration of Indulgence. The meeting room retains most of its original brick, including the bare brick floor, glass, panelling and benches.

Jordans Quaker Meeting House (1)
During the 17th century the village of Jordans became a centre for Quakerism and this Meeting House was built in 1688. It retains most of the original bricks, glass, panelling, and benches. The house has a modern extension attached to the opposite out-of-sight, north-eastern, corner and it was this extension that was virtually destroyed in a fire on 10 March 2005. The fire also caused severe damage to the fabric of the roof of the original building. The building is Grade I listed by virtue of its antiquity and associations with the Quaker movement. Jordans: The grave of William Penn
William Penn (1644-1718), the founder of Pennsylvania and a prominent Quaker, is buried in the grounds outside Image His gravestone, and that of his second wife Hannah, is the left hand one of the row of five. In accordance with Quaker customs all the headstones are identical and only bear the name of the deceased and the year of their death. Penn died penniless, having returned to England from Pennsylvania in 1701.
