Beaconsfield: Railway towards London
The Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway opened their line through Beaconsfield in 1906, and as can be seen from this and other photographs of the railway in the vicinity it involved the excavation of a long cutting. This is the view looking eastwards and "up" towards London and the next station, Seer Green and Jordans, from the footbridge that now links Caledon Road and Maxwell Road. Ironically the footpath predates both the railway and the roads, and presumably the railway company had to build the bridge to maintain the public right of way. Beaconsfield's "road to nowhere"
This empty half-built relief road was at the centre of a dispute between Buckinghamshire Council and developers over the number of affordable homes planned for nearby Wilton Park, where the carriageway abruptly terminates. The Bucks Free Press carried a report on the stand-off in September 2018. https://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/16862169.revealed-inland-homes-threatens-withdraw-plans-350-homes-wilton-park-refuse-build-section-much-needed-relief-road/
