St Mary's Parish Church, Chesham - from the west
The church lies to the west of Church Street, so that you have to climb a hill and walk the length of the building to reach the west door. You are left with the odd impression that the building has turned its back on the town. It hadn't occurred to me before, but there seems to be an 'unwritten law': that either the west or south door of an old church should open on to a well-frequented public space in a town or village. Here, the space in front of the church seems oddly secluded. Photo taken on a wet and dismal St Patrick's Day.

St Mary's, Chesham
The east end of the medieval parish church. It stands to the west of the town centre, but somewhat cut off from it by the A416. The town centre is located in a narrow strip in the bottom of the Chess valley with countryside rising to the east and west.
