Overlooking Chesham
As we climbed out of the town and crossed the railway line we looked back. The trees lining the railway cutting have been recently severely lopped. Therefore I'm sure that this view was not visible before. The view shows how quickly the town stops and the countryside starts, and it is the same this side, the woodland starts immediately behind me.

Railway line to the south of Chesham tube station
This stretch of track between Chalfont & Latimer and Chesham is the longest stretch of London Underground line not to contain a station. It is also the least used, with trains arriving at Chesham every half-hour.

The line leaving Chesham station
Chesham is the furthest north and the furthest west station on the London Underground system. The distance from here to Chalfont & Latimer is also the longest distance between two stations on the Underground system at nearly four miles. Needless to say it is also the furthest station from central London, being 25 miles from Charing Cross. Travelling out through the countryside from Rickmansworth to Chorleywood, Chalfont & Latimer and Chesham, London seems a very long way away.
The station was opened on 8th July 1889 by the Metropolitan Railway. It is Grade II listed. The line from Chesham to where it meets the line from Amersham is single track as seen here where it heads south under a footbridge. Although there was originally an island platform with a track either side, the western one was taken away in November 1970 and only the eastern side is now in use. For more information on the station see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesham_tube_station

Footbridge over the railway
A few metres south of Chesham station, terminus of the Metropolitan line of London Underground. This pedestrian bridge goes over the railway, but the fine-gauge grilles on the bridge parapets prevent photography of the line and station itself.

London Underground at Chesham
Chesham in Buckinghamshire is one of the furthest outposts of the London Underground network. It is reached by a 4-mile, single track branch line from Chalfont & Latimer.
Chesham station now has just one platform but this image shows space for a second track, which used to run along the other side of the platform. The water tower is behind the train. This would have been used to top up the steam locomotives which used to power the trains here before the line was electrified.
This view was taken from a footbridge just south of Chesham station. The bridge has been fitted with grilles making photography tricky - the dark stripes along the top and bottom of the image are part of the grille.
