Grand Union Canal in Northchurch
The utilitarian colours of the British Waterways' barges, moored here to the left and right just upstream of Northchurch Lock, compare with the gaily coloured private craft further away. The first narrowboat on the left beyond the blue barge is the Water Spirit of Bradford on Avon.

Northchurch pumping station
This is where additional canal water supplies are drawn up from a deep borehole in the chalk beds. With so much canal to feed, water supplies were obtained from as many places as possible. The pump house was built in the 1840s.

Northchurch top lock
There are four locks considered to be part of the Northchurch flight. This is the top one, number 49. Beyond is Northchurch pumping station, where additional canal water supplies are drawn up from a deep borehole in the chalk beds.
