Up 'Merseyside Express' between Tring and Berkhamsted
View NW, towards Bletchley and the North from just north of Northchurch Tunnel: WCML. Normally worked by a Pacific, that day (Cup Final Day) the 'Merseyside Express' (10.00 Liverpool Lime Street (non-stop) to Euston) had Rebuilt 'Royal Scot' 7P 4-6-0 No. 46164 'The Artists' Rifleman' (built 9/30, rebuilt 6/51, withdrawn 12/62).

Northchurch top lock
There are four locks considered to be part of the Northchurch flight. This is the top one, number 49. Beyond is Northchurch pumping station, where additional canal water supplies are drawn up from a deep borehole in the chalk beds.
