Berkhamsted: Sayer's Almshouses
Situated at the junction of Cowper Road with the High Street, these almshouses were originally built in 1684 to provide accommodation for six poor widows, as the result of a gift of £1,000 left in trust by John Sayer, chief cook to King Charles II. The inscription on the tablet in the centre reads: THE GUIFT OF JOHN SAYER ESQ. 1684.

This bank, which is due to close on Wednesday 9th March 2022, has two banners fixed to the fence in front of it. The left banner refers to Supporting the Community and is sponsored by Decorum Age UK, whilst the green banner on the right mentions that the 39th Annual Half Marathon & Fun Run, known as Berkorun, will take place in Berkhamsted on Sunday 6th March 2022. The small sign on the post to the left of the photo mentions "Goods vehicles loading only, Mon-Sat 8.30am-6.30pm".
