Freight Through Apsley
View of Apsley station from the Southbound platform showing the concrete bus shelter on the Northbound fast platform. 84008 heads a freight train through on the slow lines. The 84's were one of the pilot AC electric locomotive designs for BR. Air brake cylinders, fitted after some years in service, are visible on the roof at the opposite end to the pantograph - originally, there were 2 pantographs and the loco's were fitted for vacuum brake only. The train is made up of standard BR box vans such as those used in steam days. By the time this photo was taken this type of train was becoming rare. Half of the class 84's had already been withdrawn and 84008 was soon to be retired as well.
