River Gade and Grand Union Canal, Nash Mills Lane, Hemel Hempstead
The otherwise unnavigable River Gade http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3417447 has been incorporated into the Grand Union Canal on this stretch. To the right a new development of canalside houses and apartments is under construction. To ensure safe separation of canal and dwellings the canal bank has been strengthened by a line of sheet piles. A mallard duck shares the canal with a couple of drakes.

The narrowboat is moving towards the rather attractive new housing built on the site of a former paper mill. The steerer of the boat will have to negotiate Nash Mills Lock visible in the distance. The steerer's mate has just opened the entrance gates to facilitate a swift entry.

Lock gates, Nash Mills Lane, Hemel Hempstead
The steerer of the narrowboat in the lock is opening the gates to allow him to pilot the boat into the next stretch of the Grand Union Canal. In fact the boat was narrow enough that he only had to open one of the pair of gates.
