Autumn colours in Dolphin Square Car Park, Tring
The old building, now a solicitors office, was formerly a bakery, with the baking ovens behind it.
The grass area in the foreground was formerly part of a Victorian extension to the parish church yard.

The Old Grave Yard at Tring
The western side of the path that run through the graveyard has only this one stone left. Beyond is the Dolphin Square card park, constructed in the 1960s by demolishing a slum area of the town. On the other side of the street you can see an old chapel, now offices.

The Marvellous Willow Tree in Frogmore Street
Undoubtedly the most impressive tree to be seen bordering the streets in the centre of Tring.
It is growing in the garden of a house in Friars Walk and the entrance in front of it is the entrance to Bishop Wood School.

Where have all the Gravestones gone - At Tring
When I first visited this cemetery in the 1960s there was an almost continuous row of gravestones edging this footpath, with many more behind them. However in 1972 it was announced that if you didn't leap out of your grave to say you wanted the stone to stay (or a surviving relative spoke up on you behalf) it would be removed. A team with sledgehammers moved in in 1973 to break up and remove the unclaimed stones. (I must shamefacedly admit that I was one of those involved.)

The Dawe Family graves in the Old Cemetery, Tring
These three gravestones make the last resting place of members of the Dawe family, who lived at Town Farm, Tring. They were among the stones that survived the clearance, and you can read the inscriptions by selecting a larger image. The right hand stone records the death of Jane Dawe, daughter of James and Elizabeth, who died December 12, 1856, aged 11 years. The stone is later, but Jane is one of the earliest burials in the cemetery recorded on a surviving stone.
