St Mary the Virgin, Weston Turville
This church is well away from the village and is surrounded on three sides with open fields and it is interesting to note that nearby Wendover parish church is on the outer edge of the town, Drayton Beauchamp Parish Church only has the Old Rectory for company, and Stoke Mandeville's old parish church (now demolished) was in a wood completely surrounded by fields. It makes one wonder if all four places have moved their centres since the churches were built in medieval times. The church itself was constructed in the 13th and 14th century, with a 15th century tower, although the Norman font points to an earlier date for a church on the site. It was restored in 1860 and is a Grade I Listed Building http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=42894&mode=quick . The “A Church Near You” web site page for the church includes a good collection of intenal and external pictures http://www.achurchnearyou.com/weston-turville-st-mary-the-virgin/ but without explanatory text.

The Church Dunny, St Mary the Virgin, Weston Turville
In recent years many local churches have added modern facilities - but this is the first church closet I have seen which looks just like the little outhouse most country cottages had at the bottom of their garden 100 years ago. see Image for general information about this church.

The Tapsell Lychgate at Weston Turville
The Lychgate of St Mary the Virgin is of a very unusual design and is a grade II listed building http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=42895&mode=quick and has been renovated in 2006. The gate is mounted on a wooden post which is pivoted top and bottom and there is a weight and pulley mechanism to automatically close the gate Image . Gates of a similar design occur at Chalfont St Giles (Buckinghamshire) http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=44397&mode=quick , Heston (Middlesex) http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=202591&mode=quick and Burnsall (Yorkshire) http://www.skiptonweb.co.uk/gallery/picture.asp?id=1782 and Image . The Lychgate carries the plaque “This Tapsell Lychgate was faithfully renovated by Don Billing 2004.” Wikipedia has a page on the Tapsel or Tapsell lychgates of Sussex http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapsel_gate and it is clear that while these gates are resolve on a central post, the design is fundamentally different. The earliest gate in Sussex is believed to have been named after John Tapsel or Tapsell, probably in 1729. It seems that in 1896 the Heston gate was (incorrectly?) described as a Tapsel gate http://sac.pastfinders.org/sac_040.htm and since then the name has sometimes also been applied to gates closed with a chain, pulley and counterweight. See Image for general information about the church.

Weston Turville - St.Mary's - Southern fa?ade
The southern façade of St.Mary's church in Weston Turville - note the unusual tracery to the tops of the C14th windows in the south aisle. The church is EH Grade I listed http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1118358&searchtype=mapsearch and contains a fine example of a C12th "Aylesbury" font (see shared description below).
