The Ure at Mickley
Anyone passing through the village of Mickley would be unaware of the river which is down a bank and hidden from the village. From the western end of Mickley a bridleway runs down to the river bank to the site of a ford, however there is no right of way on the far side. This is a powerful river, running [as seen here] at normal levels, so the ford must have been a risky business. On the far bank is Tanfield Lodge.

Ruin near the river at Mickley
This ruined building stands between the mill race and the river and one would assume that it was a mill building of some sort. Early edition 6" maps show a flax mill at this point. The building is interesting in that it has the remains of a gothic style window with tracery at one end.

Mill race, Mickley
The mill race here is fed by the River Ure which has a weir a short way upstream. This feature appears to be for excess water to return to the river. Nearby are some suspicious looking sheds which emit humming noises, so one wonders if there might be some hydro electricity being generated.
