Almshouses on Swinton Terrace
Stone built almshouses with a plaque which reads 'Erected and Endowed by Admiral Vernon Harcourt 1858. Be grateful to God'. It appears that Admiral Octavius Vernon Harcourt was one of two admirals in the family, Octavius being the 8th son of Edward Venables Vernon Harcourt who was Archbishop of York. In 1849 Admiral Harcourt was appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire, two of his good works being the building of the church at Healey [SE1880]and these almshouses which he endowed with £1775 in 3% government bonds.

Former school in Masham
This 19thC building [now a private house] was once a school. It is next to the almshouses erected by Admiral Vernon Harcourt, but there doesn't seem to be the same connection here.
