Coiled-straw skeps, Swanley Grange
The monks of Fountains Abbey would have made 'skeps' to keep bees for their honey for use in honeyed wines, mead, and for sweetening food along with wax for making candles.

Play area
Begun in Sept 06 - finished in April 07, the play area is sited between the Visitors' Centre and Swanley Barn.
This picture was taken early in the morning before the arrival of children who tend to make a lot of noise & mess.

Swanley Grange, Fountains Abbey
Swanley Grange is a number of farm buildings which have been converted into a study and activity centre. It is between the visitor centre and the abbey.

Pollarded Sycamore
This massive sycamore grows in an area of scrub at the edge of a field between the Visitors Centre & the Abbey at Fountains. It was probably on the line of a hedge or ancient boundary.
