Victoria Clock Tower and Princess Terrace
The clock tower was erected to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, whilst behind is the sunlit frontage of Princess Terrace, which like the clock tower is grade 2 listed and is dated as mid 19th century. This imposing block was part of the northward expansion of the city towards the newly opened railway station which was on the fringe of the built up area across the river. Development along North Road towards the river and station was always piecemeal as there are potential problems with gypsum in the area which can cause sink holes.

Victorian terrace in Ripon
Some large and desirable houses were erected to the north of the city centre in Victorian times, presumably because of the proximity to the railway station. This attractive block stands on the corner of North Street and Princess Road.
