Ripon: the Workhouse Garden wild flower meadow
The Ripon Workhouse complex is virtually complete, and is the home of the successful Workhouse Museum. The Garden is at the north of the site. In the days when the Workhouse was open, it provided much of the food consumed. Today, a team of volunteers has cultivated it and grown crops that would have been tended here in the 19th Century. A new feature is the wild flower meadow, which is not only attractive in itself, but is also a magnet for pollinating insects

Ripon Workhouse - kitchen garden
The Ripon Union Workhouse - now a museum bringing to life the experiences of those who lived under the harsh regime - was as self-sufficient as possible. This included the cultivation of a sizeable kitchen garden growing mainly potatoes, onions and leeks - part of the regular diet of the inmates. The garden has been restored as it would have been in about 1890 using authentic plant varieties.
