Ripon Town Hall
This fine late 18th century Grade 2 listed building stands on the west side of the Market Square. The "Wakeman" referred to in the text was the officer who for 1000 years was responsible for the administration of justice in the town.

Ripon: The 'Hornblower Tavern'
This public house is named for the Ripon Hornblower, who, in a tradition which still continues in present times, emerges each evening at Curfew time, and blows his horn to remind all God-fearing citizens that they should be indoors. Of course, this rule is not enforced in modern times.
