Cedar Court Hotel
Another of Harrogate's rather splendid hotels. This one looks out over the Stray in High Harrogate and predates most of the hotels in Low Harrogate. Originally the Queens Head in 1687, it was rebuilt and extended several times over the next two centuries, becoming known as the Queens Hotel. In size and grandeur it rivalled the Granby on the opposite side of the Stray, but its reputation was one of welcoming wealthy mill barons from the industrial cities, rather than the titled clientele that favoured the Granby, and thus it earned the nickname 'The Manchester Warehouse'. The present building is largely of 1855 and ceased to be a hotel in the mid 20th century, serving for many years as the regional HQ for the health authority. In 1999 it was refurbished and reopened as the Cedar Court which boasts 100 bedrooms.
