New houses off Giles Street, Netherthong
There were buildings here before, but apparently redeveloped. The architect has used his imagination - this is certainly not a vernacular style!

Netherthong Post Office, Giles Street
This building puzzles me. I thought it was probably a Co-operative store with warehousing, but estate agents describe it as a factory converted to a house, and including the post office. The latter does not have the normal oval sign on the wall, although there were post office leaflets on view inside, and I thought it had closed. However it is listed as an alternative to Hinchliffe Mill Post Office, which was due for closure in the last round.

Netherthong School
Netherthong has grown considerably during the 20C, with large new estates such as those on the sites of Deanhouse Hospital and Mills, and it is good that it still has its own primary school. The 19C building has been retained, with single-storey extensions.

Without the shadow which was on HB's shot. It is still apparently open but not on Satruday.

Valve marker plates, Towngate, Netherthong
These are slightly unusual in that they are metal plates rather than metal or concrete posts. They both indicate valves on a 12-inch water main out in the road (the actual valve covers are now buried under tarmac).
