Why such tall walls? The land on the right is otherwise unenclosed and has moorland vegetation, and there is a field of grass on the left. The cross-section of the wall shows how it is tapered from bottom to top.

Old Milestone by Longwood Gate, Huddersfield
Carved stone post by the UC road, in parish of HUDDERSFIELD (KIRKLEES District), Longwood Gate; opposite No. 28, near junction with Prospect Road; Longwood, on narrow verge, on South side of road. Huddersfield 'To - From' stone, erected by an unknown authority in the 19th century. Damaged.
Inscription reads:-
