Milnsbridge canal scene
This is bridge No.31 Factory Lane Bridge over the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. 1861 is the date cast into the fascia of the bridge. Immediately to the west is Lock No.8E adjacent to Union Mill.

Burdett Mill, Milnsbridge
Now apartments. I was once given a press clipping with a photo of this mill talking about listed mill buildings as "millstones" (as in round the neck). Certainly in Yorkshire they are now desirable for conversions. Being alongside the canal is probably a bonus. Badly done conversions annoy me (polite version for Geograph towers) but this is actually as good as it gets (cleaned up but without balconies and other execrable excrescences). A picture of the mill in 1983 is seen here

Factory Lane, Milnsbridge
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal is to the left with Union Mill beyond. The cleaned block is now apartments. On the right edge is Burdett Mill - also apartments. A former steam engine house is seen in the distance.
I grew up less than a mile from here and was very familiar with all the nooks and crannies of this industrial landscape.

Union and Burdett Mills
Union is on the left and Burdett on the right. Both are now converted to apartments. Twenty years ago these were black, not golden. I've been photographing mills around here since the early 1980s.

Canal scene at Milnsbridge
Taken on a somewhat overcast day, the low light levels lend a slightly gloomy feel to this image of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal viewed towards Factory Lane bridge (No.31). The building to the right of the canal, part of Union Mills, looks as though it has now been converted into apartments.

Towards Lock No 8E, Huddersfield Narrow Canal
Looking west, the heavily industrialised surroundings are evident. Union Mill is to the right, and Burdett Mill on the left. The lane that crosses the bridge just before the lock is called, appropriately enough, Factory Lane.
