Miss Jekyll's Thunder House, Heath Lane, Busbridge (1)
It is said that Gertrude Jekyll had this little tower built so that she could watch the sky during thunder storms. The structure was designed for her by Edwin Lutyens (still in his mid-twenties) in about 1895. Lutyens was a local man, having grown up in Thursley, and had yet to achieve a national reputation. I should add that though I'd heard of this building, I'd never seen it illustrated and had only the roughest idea of its whereabouts. I'd stopped to take photos of Busbridge school, then wandered along Heath Lane in the hope of stumbling on one or other of the Lutyens/Jekyll sites I knew to be in the area. I took this photo just a couple of minutes' walk from the Brighton Road. These days the view from the gazebo cannot be that wide - I can only imagine that the trees that now surround it weren't there 120 years ago. For another view of the building, see: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3505564

Miss Jekyll's Thunder House, Heath Lane, Busbridge (2)
It is said that Gertrude Jekyll had this little tower built so that she could watch thunderstorms. That sheds an interesting light on the lady's temperament - and perhaps also on the funds she had at her command. The tower is triangular in plan, and was designed by Miss Jekyll's protégé, Edwin Lutyens in the days before he became widely known. I can't help wondering whether the idea for the triangular plan was Jekyll's or Lutyens' - and whether either of them had seen Image in Northamptonshire. I had first visited this spot a few days earlier. For my initial impressions, see: Image

Heath Lane
This rough track leads ESE from near Busbridge church, giving access to a number of properties with Gertrude Jekyll associations. The building in this image is part of The Quadrangle - a property which originated as the outbuildings of the house known as Munstead Wood, built for Gertrude Jekyll by Edwin Lutyens.
