Sign for the Flying Bull
The Two Counties Inn has now reverted to its former name the Flying Bull and this is the new sign. There are two possible stories as to how the pub got its name. Two stages-coaches, the Fly and the Bull used to call at the inn on the London to Portsmouth route and were responsible for the name. The other is that the licensee of the pub prefers to tell the story of a mad bull which once came crashing into the bar.

The Flying Bull, on the A3 at Rake.
This was once a very important coaching stop on the London - Portsmouth road. The Hampshire/W. Sussex boundary runs through the middle of the pub. The parish of Liss has a tradition of "beating the bounds" and they used to put a boy into the oven at the Flying bull to beat the bounds as the parish boundary is reputed to run through the kitchen.
